Chapter 7 Discussion

Plagiarism is often a mistake of failing to site sources correctly. you want your readers to understand what ideas are yours and which ones come from your sources. paraphrases are also needing to be cited accurately or they will be considered plagiarism. intentional plagiarism is passing off others work as your own. even closely related writing can be considered plagiarism. to avoid plagiarism hassle make sure to cite sources correctly! also, take notes carefully to ensure you don't think a quote you wrote down is something you thought up on your own. There are many reasons why writers may feel the need to plagiarize, but none of them are acceptable.

Chapter 6 Discussion

This chapter teaches you how to organize all the information that you have found. this goes into detail about printed information and digital information. it teaches how to categorize information that is useful and will be useful later in the process. It goes in depth in explaining how to save things on your computer and even you iPhone if that is where you are taking your notes from. Note taking is also discussed in this chapter. How to take notes correctly and also how to store them. Your note taking affects the focus on your paper and how you form and produce your arguments. When taking notes you need to decide one way you want to do it and use that method consistently. Use direct quotes from the text you are taking notes from, this can become difficult to add to your paper so refer to where you got the quote to be able to look back and include it in your paper. Summarizing what you've read is also important, so you can get a general feel for what the source is about if you need a reference of its nature later. Record your reactions to the sources, so you can build off of those in your paper. what surprises you might surprise others. also, you are going to want to compare sources to one another. /this chapter also goes in depth about creating an annotated bibliography.

Chapter 3 Discussion

Developing a research question and proposal is what this chapter is about. to begin to develop your question you need to reflect on your writing situation. your thoughts about your topic as you've looked further in will change and develop, so ask yourself what and why. generating questions requires you to look at your history, the information you've already gathered, goals of the topic, ect. form research questions based on these things. after this, decide on one question that you think will help you achieve your purpose in your writing the best. Narrowing the scope of your research question to allow it to fit into your essay is helpful, you want to focus your question to be able to form a response. a research proposal is a formal presentation of plan for writing your entire paper. this goes in to detail on how to accomplish this accurately and successfully with everything you need to include.

Chapter 4 Discussion

This chapter teaches us to read with an "attitude" vs evaluating. reading for meaning and being interactive with your reading to form questions. it tells us to form research questions and respond to our research questions. This will help us form a position statement. Again, marking, annotating, and noting your sources is addressed in this chapter. you should be forming questions from your sources. look at the authors main point when reading a source, also learn if it is primary or secondary. you want to be able to identify the type of source you are reading. in your paper you will want to use appeals and evidence. this includes appeals to emotion, authority, principles, beliefs, character, logic, and more. you want to persuade your reader into understanding your point of view on the topic. Evidence will need to be used to back up your appeals and position.

Chapter 2 Discussion

Learning how to find credible sources for your topic starts here. this chapter teaches us how to search our library's online catalog which is vital to finding our sources. it lets us know how to tell by the look of the writing if it is a decent resource to spend time looking into or not. also, it tells us to use books from the library. this chapter goes over the importance of each type of resource. Books, Articles in scholarly journals, Articles in other professional journals, Articles in magazines, Theses and dissertations, media sources ect. Skimming your sources allows you to get a taste of the source before spending the time to read through the whole thing, with needing 20 sources you need to be able to pick out the good from the bad. Once you've found your sources you want to annotate them and take notes about them, seeing what would be useful to include into your paper. finding issues to address within your topic is important as well. this is what your paper will be about. to do this, look over your sources and reading about your topic and look for repeated concepts throughout your topic.

Chapter 1 Discussion

Chapter one walks you through the research process and helps provide advice and guidance on how to pick a research topic. Taking ownership of the project is important because this is what will keep you motivated throughout the entire paper. This was helpful because I would have picked a topic I thought had a lot of information about vs a topic that I found interesting or i thought would be interesting to write about. This chapter explained the research writing process and explained in depth how to go about beginning this process and also laid out skills we will need to learn throughout writing this paper. Sources are going to be very difficult for me to master, but chapter one explains the importance of being able to work with sources and incorporate them into your writing. Developing a position is the first thing you want to do after learning about the topic you chose, this will give you a direction to travel with your paper. TIME MANAGEMENT is extremely important. Because we are working on this project for 10 weeks, its important to learn to manage time appropriately.
